Pregame For The Brooklyn Book Festival With Bookend Events In Fort Greene & Clinton Hill


The Brooklyn Book Festival–the annual, free, massive literary event that is a must for readers of all ages–is coming up on Sunday, September 21, and will feature a ton of events. But if you just can’t wait, you certainly don’t have to — starting today, numerous Bookend events are scheduled for around the borough. Here’s a list of some nearby:

David Mitchell in Conversation
Tuesday, September 16, 7pm
Saint Joseph’s College (245 Clinton Avenue between Willoughby and Dekalb Avenues), $30

Cloud Atlas writer David Mitchell will speak along with a surprise guest at this Greenlight Bookstore offsite event. Tickets are pricey, but include a signed copy of Mitchell’s new novel, The Bone Clocks.

LIU Literary Scavenger Hunt
Wednesday, September 17, 5pm
Long Island University (1 University Plaza at Flatbush and Dekalb Avenues)

Use fun clues to learn about writers who’ve graced LIU with their brilliant works, plus receive prizes including copies of said authors’ writing.

Words on Whiskey
Wednesday, September 17, 6pm
BLDG 92 at the Brooklyn Navy Yard (63 Flushing Avenue at Carlton Avenue), $5

Colin Spoelman, co-founder of Kings County Distillery, will be reading from his book Guide to Urban Moonshining. The reading will be followed by a discussion of whiskey in Wallabout, plus a tour of the distillery.

Poets & Passion — Talkin’ Dub: Mikey Smith Tribute
Thursday, September 18, 7pm
Nicholas Reggae (570 Fulton Street between Hudson Avenue and Rockwell Place)

Dub Poetry pioneer Mikey Smith is the subject of this event, presented by the Caribbean Cultural Theatre, the Caribbean Research Center, and Medgar Evers College, and featuring appearances by AJA, jaBez, Queen Majeeda, and Ras Osagyefo.

Brooklyn Indie Party

Greenlight Bookstore (686 Fulton Street at South Portland Avenue)

This celebration of independent publishing is now in its fifth year, and given the number of publishers and sellers on hand for 2014, shows no signs of stopping. Enjoy literature from Akashic Books, Melville House, and more, as well as music, refreshments, and other goodies.

“Dinosaur Vs.” Reading

This family friendly event will feature author and illustrator Bob Shea reading tales from his Dinosaur Vs. series. Dinosaur has to face daunting tasks like the first day of preschool and cleanup time–but for your little ones, his adventures are pure fun. Space is limited, so get there early.

Tiphanie Yanique and Victoria Chevalier
Saturday, September 20, 3-5pm
MoCADA (80 Hanson Place at South Portland Avenue)

Yanique, who recently published Land of Love and Drowning and How to Escape from a Leper Colony, will discuss literary themes with Medgar Evers professor Chevalier.
