Police Suspended, Husband Arrested After Death of 22-Year Old Mom in Crown Heights
CROWN HEIGHTS – New developments in yesterday’s death of 22-year old Tonie Wells have led to the suspension of two NYPD officers and the arrest of the deceased’s husband, Barry Wells.
Two police officers were suspended yesterday after allegedly ignoring a 911 call to check on Tonie Wells, sources told the New York Post. It was Wells’ sister that called police, telling them that Tonie was “scared” of her husband, 29-year old Barry Wells, the sources said.
While officers were dispatched to the Wells’ Crown Heights residence, they didn’t even get out of their car to check on the woman, law enforcement sources told the Post.
Later, at approximately 9:50 am, police discovered the body Tonie Wells at the bottom of the staircase leading to the basement of the home on Sterling Place, near Albany Avenue. EMS pronounced Wells dead at the scene.
Barry Wells was arrested Wednesday night and questioned by police. The Medical Examiner’s Office will make a final determination as to the cause of death.
