EAST FLATBUSH – Police shot a man brandishing a weapon in the leg last night—only to find he was holding a BB gun.

Just after 10:00 pm on Thursday, October 12, police responded to a call about a man with a gun at the deli on Church Ave between New York Ave and E 34th Street, said Terence Monahan, Chief of Patrol.

Police arrived and confronted the suspect, but when they tried to take him into custody, he fled north on 34th Street, where he was seen with a gun in his hand.

Monahan said police fired one shot, which struck the victim in the leg, but he managed to keep going. He was finally apprehended inside 189 East 34th Street.

The firearm was recovered at the scene and determined to be a BB gun, said Monohan.

The victim is a 19-year old man with multiple priors, said police. He was transported by EMS to Kings County Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition.
