Police Seek Suspect Snapped In Stolen Phone's Selfie App
Q Train Grand Larceny Suspect

Turns out those security apps for your phone may actually be worthwhile.

The NYPD is asking for the public’s help in finding a man wanted for questioning in connection to a mobile phone grab on a Q train within our 70th Precinct.

Police say the grand larceny occurred at about 4am on Saturday, May 11 on a southbound Q train, when a 25-year-old man fell asleep on the subway. When he woke up, police say he noticed his phone was gone from his pants pocket.

Here’s where the flattering photo to the right comes in. Apparently, the man the police are looking for was photographed and the photo recovered using the Lookout Mobile Security app on the stolen phone.

The suspect is described as a heavy-set Hispanic man between 20-30 years of age.

After a number of iPhone thefts in the area over the past year, we’ve heard recommendations from Inspector Rodriguez from the 70th to install these kinds of recovery apps. Unfortunately we’ve heard at least one story of an app not being of any use in reconnecting a stolen phone to its owner, so we’re hoping there’s a successful ending to this story.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). The public can also submit tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website or by texting your tips to 274637 (CRIMES) then entering TIP577. Police say all calls are confidential.
