Updated: Woman Arrested, Charged In Death Of 19-Month-Old Son In Ocean Avenue Apartment

The NYPD is investigating after they found a 19-month-old boy dead in an Ocean Avenue apartment last night.

Police say they responded to a 911 call of a possible emotionally disturbed woman on Sunday, October 6 at just before 8pm at a building on Ocean Ave near Glenwood Rd, and that when they arrived, they found the child, identified as Justin Stephens, unconscious and unresponsive at the location. Police report that EMS arrived and transported the baby to Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The boy’s 20-year-old mother was taken into custody and is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation, the Daily News reports.

UPDATE: Police have arrested and charged the victim’s mother, Anna Thomas, with manslaughter and second degree murder. The New York Post says police initially responded to a call about Thomas attempting to jump from the window of the apartment where she was staying, and that she had left a suicide note about her and Justin’s deaths. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
