BEDFORD-STUYVESANT – The death of a baby boy last year is now being investigated as a homicide, police announced Friday.

Just before 6pm on Wednesday, April 17, 2018, police responded to a call at a home on Gates Avenue between Nostrand and Marcy where they found six-month-old Gianni Gilmore unconscious and unresponsive. EMS transported the child to Woodhull Hospital where he died three days later, according to police.

At the time of the incident, the child was in the care of his father, Shatwaun Gilmore, according to the New York Daily News. After Gianni’s maternal grandmother, Jacqueline Saintangle, noticed that the child was not moving, the father called 911, according to the paper.

Police initially arrested Gilmore, who was on parole for attempted robbery, charging him with child endangerment and assault. The charges were soon dropped, the New York Post reported at the time.

A medical examiner has determined that Gianni died of “abusive head trauma,” the Daily News reports. As of Monday afternoon, no arrests have been made and the investigation remains ongoing, the NYPD said.
