Playtime In Park Slope: Upcoming Children’s Events

Looking for something fun to do with the whole family this week? From a kinetic dance performance to a hug-filled storytime and a chance to ice skate with a familiar bear family, there are a lot of great kid-friendly events coming up in our area:

Babies & Books
When: Wednesday, January 14, 10am
Where: Central Library, Youth Wing, 10 Grand Army Plaza
What: Kids ages birth to 18 months and their guardians can enjoy stories, songs, and rhymes.
How much: Free, but you must pick up a ticket the morning of the program at the Children’s reference desk.

Rock With Adam
When: Wednesday, January 14, 10:30am
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue
What: Are you ready to rock? Neighborhood kids are definitely in for a treat as guitarist Adam Blotner plays some of his favorite tunes.
How much: Free, but tickets are required for entry (one per family), so be sure to arrive early to score yours.

Storytime
When: Friday, January 16, 10am
Where: Postmark Cafe, 326 6th Avenue
What: A weekly storytime has returned to Postmark! Stop by every Friday for some free fun.
How much: Free, but there’s only space for 20 kids, so arrive early to ensure your spot.

IMpossible IZZpossible
When: Friday, January 16, 7pm & Saturday, January 17, 2pm
Where: BAM Fisher, 321 Ashland Place
What: Expect a jaw-dropping, infectious show when this dance troupe, which combines hip-hop styles with tap, step, and modern dance celebrates the African roots of American contemporary dance.
How much: All tickets $12, available in advance.

Story Play
When: Saturday, January 17, 10am
Where: Central Library, Youth Wing, 10 Grand Army Plaza
What: Children from birth to age five and their caregivers are invited to hear a story and play with toys.
How much: Free!

Hug Machine Storytime
When: Saturday, January 17, 11am
Where: Barnes & Noble, 267 7th Avenue
What: Join in on this storytime, which includes activities, featuring the tale of some irresistible hugs.
How much: Free!

Families Celebrate Africa
When: Saturday, January 17, 4pm
Where: Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture, 53 Prospect Park West
What: Simba Yangala and the dancers from JungleDom will guide children of all ages through a relaxed African dance lesson, followed by a performance that welcomes the participation from both children and adults. Proceeds from this class will help provide scholarships for BSEC’s Ethics for Children Classes.
How much: $15 per child (3-7) in advance, $20 per child at the door; adults 18 and older accompanying a child, and children 2 and under, attend free.

Nature Playtime: Zoo
When: Sunday, January 18, 10:30am-12:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Zoo, 450 Flatbush Avenue
What: The Prospect Park Alliance, Prospect Park Zoo, and Tinkergarten are teaming up (with a little help from the Disney Conservation Fund) to bring families creative play opportunities in the park’s natural areas. Every Sunday through April, those visiting the Prospect Park Zoo will be able to take part in Nature Playtime! in the native plant garden. Look for nature-inspired art, insect observation, playing with snow, scavenger hunts, and more. Want to try some Nature Playtime activities on your own? Download a free activity card here. Figure 8 Play Date With The Berenstain Bears
When: Sunday, January 18, 2-4pm
Where: Lakeside, Prospect Park
What: This series from WNET Kids Club THIRTEEN lets families join PBS characters — this week, from The Berenstain Bears — for some loops around the skating rink, as well as character-themed activities and arts and crafts.
How much: Skating admission is $8, skate rentals are $6; Kids Club members get free admission and $1 off skating rental.
