Rob Bate, President of the Brooklyn Bird Club and expert on the varieties found in Prospect Park, provided a photo of the Painted Bunting.

Bate describes the bird below:

There is a beautiful rare songbird in Prospect Park hanging out in, on, and around the green roof on top of the LeFrak Skating Center. It has been a major draw with hundreds of birders making the trek from all over to see this super colorful bird, the Painted Bunting. Many birders have never seen this species and nearly all have never seen it in New York State.
The green roof at the LeFrak Center was particularly well designed and situated, as well as having been wisely landscaped with native plant species.  As a result, though small for a habitat, it has attracted a goodly array of songbirds, this one being a rather spectacular example.

Bate recently spoke with us about the red-tailed hawks which recently clashed with an illegal drone in Prospect Park.
