Pet Spotlight: Ella the Pitbull Mix

We met 10-year-old Ella playing in the snow in Fort Greene Park with her owner, Matt Klein, 43. He adopted Ella from a pound when she was a few months old.

“She’s named for Ella Baker, the unsung civil rights leader,” Klein said. Baker was a black human rights activist who worked with Martin Luther King Jr. and W.E.B. Du Bois.

“She’s somewhat of an entitled dog,” Klein said. He brings her to his Cobble Hill office every day, where he works as the director for the Blue Ridge Foundation, which helps launch non-profits in the city.

Klein and Ella have lived in Fort Greene since 2005, and have seen changes in the neighborhood.

“It’s gotten more expensive and the racial demographics have changed,” Klein said. “One of the biggest things to come in is probably the BAM cultural district.”
