Elderly Neighbor Killed After Being Struck By An SUV On Avenue U
MADISON – A 77-year-old woman was killed by an SUV while crossing Avenue U just two blocks away from her home Sunday morning.
On January 20 at about 11:15 a.m., cops were called to Madison to find the injured Gail Ackerman laying on the pavement.
According to the NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad, Ackerman was crossing Avenue U at East 29th Street. At the same time, a 57-year-old driver traveling northbound on East 29th Street in a Nissan SUV turned left, going westbound onto Avenue U, and struck Ackerman. She was taken to Kings County Hospital where she died from the injuries sustained in the crash. Cops say the driver remained on the scene and no arrests have been made. The investigation is ongoing.
This is not the first pedestrian death this month. Just last week, 27-year-old Fernando Trejo was killed while crossing the street in a hit-and-run a block away from his Sunset Park home. On January 11, a 51-year-old was struck and killed by a truck while crossing the street in Williamsburg.
