The Pathmark in Gravesend is going to become a Stop & Shop, pending the completion of its sale as part of a package deal that transfers 25 A&P-owned stores to the Stop & Shop Supermarket Company for $146 million.

The change in ownership is slated to be complete before the end of the year, according to a Stop & Shop in a press release issued yesterday. Of the 25 stores being sold, two of them are in Brooklyn: the one in Gravesend at 2965 Cropsey Avenue and one at 625 Atlantic Avenue (across from Barclays Center).

Other locations where stores are being sold are in the Bronx, Staten Island, Queens, and various locations in Long Island and elsewhere in the state. The stores range from Waldbaums and Pathmarks to A&Ps — all owned by the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, known as A&P for short.

The sale follows A&P’s bankruptcy filing, filed yesterday on July 19. It has to now be approved by the bankruptcy courts.

“Stop & Shop is always looking for convenient locations to better serve our customers,” said Don Sussman, Stop & Shop’s New York Metro Division President. “We are very happy to have the opportunity to expand our presence in greater New York and serve new customers. We look forward to providing customers with delivering unmatched selection, quality and value that they have come to expect from Stop & Shop.”

It is too early to know whether existing staff will remain at the store or what changes will be made to stock, but we’ll let you know when we hear more.

What do you think of the impending change in ownership? Are you looking forward to having a Stop & Shop or does it not matter as long as it’s still a supermarket?
