The fall leaves are crunching! If you’re hanging around the Slope this weekend and looking for adventure, we’ve got everything from Brian Selznick’s new book, an H.P. Lovecraft tour, to the last Smorgasburg in Prospect Park this year. Don’t miss some of our favorite events from around the area:

Brooklyn By the Book presents Brian Selznick
When: Thursday, October 8, 6:30pm
Where: Congregation Beth Elohim, 274 Garfield Place (at 8th Avenue)
What: Brian Selznick does it again! His new book, The Marvels, is a century-spanning adventure tale of beauty, mystery, and survival told in the signature style of writing and illustration that made young-reader classics of The Adventures of Hugo Cabret and Wonderstruck. The story begins with Billy Marvel, who survives a shipwreck, is taken in by a London theater troupe, and becomes the first of several generations of famous actors. One hundred years later, Joseph Jervis vanishes from school and takes up with his mysterious uncle, Albert Nightingale, whose strange, massive house holds secrets to their family’s past.
How much: $10 ($7 for CBE members and BPL card holders).

Calloway’s Salon, A Cabaret of Sorts
When: Friday, October 9, 7:30pm (doors),  8:00pm (show)
Where: Threes Brewing, 333 Douglass Street, between 3rd and 4th Avenues
What: Come and be dazzled as Calloway and his closest friends and enemies take you through their musings and journey deep, deep inside Calloway’s hole. A night of skin, songs and maybe a little dancing. You will leave smarter. Along with the killer band Dave Tedeschi, Roger Lent, and Chris Van Voorst Van Beest.
How much: $15. Tickets are available here, or $17 at the door.

H.P. Lovecraft Brooklyn Guided Tour with Jane Rose
When: Saturday, October 10, 3:30pm
Where: Offsite Morbid Anatomy Museum event. Meet at Parkside and Ocean Avenue, right outside the Prospect Park Entrance.
What: In this tour, filmmaker, writer and Lovecraft fan Jane Rose will trace a path from Lovecraft’s high hopes at the beginning of his Brooklyn sojourn in Flatbush, to tough times in the area now known as Brooklyn Heights, and artistic renewal beyond. While Lovecraft, an avid walker and antiquarian, roamed New York City and its surroundings widely, this tour will focus specifically on his ties to Brooklyn, exploring his impressions and inspirations along the way. The tour will take place in two sections, with Part 1 in Flatbush and Part 2 in Brooklyn Heights. Attendees can come to either section, but both are strongly recommended in order to get a full picture of Lovecraft’s live while in Brooklyn. Transportation time is allowed between the sections. Admission covers both sections.
How much: $20. Tickets are available here.

Screening of “The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?”
When: Saturday, October 10, 7:00pm (doors),  8:00pm (show)
Where: Littlefield, 622 Degraw Street, between 3rd and 4th Avenues
What: Special New York Super Week screening of “The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?” – a documentary about the proposed 1998 Superman Lives feature film that would have starred Nicolas Cage. Followed by Q&A with producer Holly Payne and director Jon Schnepp.
