Park Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: October 22-25
The Fall season is known for a lot of activity, and it’s certainly the case this weekend! If you’re hanging around the Slope this weekend and looking for adventure, we’ve got everything from cookbook talk, beatbox competition, to the new Morbid Anatomy Museum exhibition. Don’t miss some of our favorite events from around the area:
Brooklyn By The Book Presents: Yotam Ottolenghi & Ramael Scully in conversation with Mark Russ Federman
When: Thursday, October 22, 7:30pm
Where: Congregation Beth Elohim, 274 Garfield Place (at 8th Avenue)
What: Yotam Ottolenghi, one of the world’s great culinary innovators, returns to Brooklyn for the release of his newest cookbook, Nopi, featuring recipes from his acclaimed London restaurant. BBTB’s last event with Ottolenghi celebrated the publication of Jerusalem, one of the most influential and best selling cookbooks of the last several years. His new book, co-written with Nopi head chef Ramael Scully, showcases a different side of Ottolenghi’s cooking, a dazzling mixture of Asian and Middle Eastern cuisines. In conversation with Mark Russ Federman of Russ & Daughters.

Arthur Kampela New Music Band and Michas/Toledo Guitars
When: Thursday, October 22, 8:15pm
Where: ShapeShifter Lab, 18 Whitwell Place (between 1st and Carroll Streets)
What: Kampela’s music navigates between hybridism and complexity. From atonal sambas, or avant Bossas-Novas to highly complex new classical music for acoustic instruments and electronic and video media. In this show both aspects of hisd recent production will be heard. Michas/Toledo Guitars is a duo that explores textural and timbral possibilities that push the limits of standard guitar music & practice.

Opening Night of American Beatbox Championships 2015
When: Friday, October 23, 7:00pm
Where: Littlefield, 622 Degraw Street, between 3rd and 4th Avenues
What: Some pretty amazing beatboxers come out for this one. Feel like checking out the elimination rounds. Those will be held on the same day at 4pm.
How much: $15 (separate price for each event) Tickets are available here for open eliminations at 4pm, and here for the 7pm show.
House of Wax: Anatomical, Pathological, and Ethnographic Waxworks from Castan’s Panopticum, Berlin, 1869-1922
When: Friday, October 23, 7pm Opening Night Party, Saturdays and Sunday, 12-6pm.
Where: Morbid Anatomy Museum, 424 3rd Avenue at 7th Street.
What: House of Wax will exhibit a selection of waxworks once shown as part of Castan’s Berlin-based Panopticum (1869-1922). The full collection, never before exhibited in the US, will later be installed at the forthcoming Alamo Drafthouse in Downtown Brooklyn.
How much: Opening Night Party, $30-$50. Tickets available here. Regular admission fees: Admission to the exhibition & library is $5. Seniors and students are $3, and children 12 and under are free.
Halloween Haunted Walk & Carnival
When: Saturday, October 24, 12-3pm
Where: Nethermead, Prospect Park
What: Looking for a frightful adventure in the park? Ghouls and goblins lurk behind the trees, ready to provide a silly scare at the Prospect Park Alliance’s annual Haunted Walk. Note that young children should be accompanied by an adult. After the Haunted Walk, head over to the Halloween Carnival, which features fun games for children, a visit from Snoopy, and more.

Smorgasburg and The Brooklyn Flea at Industry City
When: Saturday, October 25 and Sunday, October 26, 10am-6pm
Where: Industry City, 241 37th Street (between 2nd and 3rd Avenues)
What: Smorgasburg has moved down to the booming Industry City, which may be new territory for you. While the move was announced some time ago, Industry City is housing both Smorgasburg and The Brooklyn Flea every Saturday and Sunday until March 27, 2016. Keep in mind that Industry City is big — the entrance address is 241 37th Street. This is just two blocks from the 36th Street D/N/R subway station—only two stops from Manhattan on the D train!—and a short walk from the B35, B38 and B70 bus stops. The 39th Street exit off the Gowanus Expressway/BQE also takes you pretty much to our doorstep (and to the second-busiest Costco in America next door).
Sunday Colloquy: Learning Humanism from My Parents With Temma Ehrenfeld
When: Sunday, October 25, 11am-12:30pm
Where: Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture, 53 Prospect Park West at 2nd Street
What: Speaker Temma Ehrenfeld will describe how her contact with Ethical Culture Leaders impressed her and led to study with the Humanist Institute. Ehrenfeld is an award-winning journalist who covers health and psychology. After a decade as staff reporter, writer and editor at Newsweek, she became an independent writer and editor, including a blog at Psychology Today. She has ghostwritten a memoir and edited many books.
