Park Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: October 15-18
The Fall season is known for a lot of activity, and it’s certainly the case this weekend! If you’re hanging around the Slope this weekend and looking for adventure, we’ve got everything from Gowanus Open Studios, a Morbid Flea Market, to the first weekend of Smorgasburg at Industry City. Don’t miss some of our favorite events from around the area:
Gowanus Open Studios
When: Thursday, October 15 – Sunday, October 18. Times and spaces vary.
Where: Throughout the neighborhood. This map will give you the details.
What: An intriguing 4-day event comes to the neighborhood – and we mean ALL of the neighborhood. You will have an opportunity to visit artists in their studios and speak with them about their work. The studios will be open on Saturday, October 17 and Sunday 18 between 12-6pm, when you can see pieces from more than 300 artists while exploring their workspaces, which stretch from Court Street to 6th Avenue, and from Atlantic Avenue to 14th Street. There are many events surrounding the open studios. We published an article that gives you all the details.
How much: While studio visits are free, some events throughout the weekend do cost. Visit here for details.
Speak Into My Good Eye Official CMJ Showcase: Mount Sharp, A Deer A Horse, Deal Casino, Vivid Dreams & Julian Fulton
When: Thursday, October 15, 7:00pm
Where: Littlefield, 622 Degraw Street, between 3rd and 4th Avenues
What: Speak Into My Good Eye is super excited to present its first ever official CMJ showcase. The night will also double as the release show for the 2nd Annual 24 Hour Songwriting Challenge.
How much: $8 in advance, $10 day of show. Tickets are available here.
The Frizzy Dizzy Comedy Show
When: Saturday, October 17, 8:30pm
Where: Dizzy’s on Fifth, 230 5th Avenue at President Street.
What: Host Jennifer Saltzman created this high caliber, live stand up comedy with pros who regularly perform at all the major comedy clubs in Manhattan. Instead of traveling in to the city, paying a steep cover charge + 2 drink minimum at a traditional comedy club, you can access the same quality entertainment right here in the neighborhood. The lineup includes: Cyrus McQueen (Last Comic Standing), Gary Vider (America’s Got Talent), Scotty Levell, Mick Diflo, Jon Laster (NBC Stand Up for Diversity) and Julie Kottakis.
How much: $10. Tickets are available here.
Brooklyn Backbeat Triple Bill
When: Saturday, October 17, 8:30pm
Where: ShapeShifter Lab, 18 Whitwell Place (between 1st and Carroll Streets)
What: A close knit crew of Brooklyn artists dedicated to making dope new music in the realm of RnB, Hip-Hop and Jazz. With Sami Stevens and Her All-Star Band, KG,B Live, and Quazzy Akeem.
How much: $7.
Smorgasburg and The Brooklyn Flea at Industry City
When: Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18, 10am-6pm
Where: Industry City, 241 37th Street (between 2nd and 3rd Avenues)
What: Smorgasburg heads down to the booming Industry City, which may be new territory for you. While the move was announced some time ago, Industry City will house both Smorgasburg and The Brooklyn Flea every Saturday and Sunday until March 27, 2016. Keep in mind that Industry City is big — the entrance address is 241 37th Street. This is just two blocks from the 36th Street D/N/R subway station—only two stops from Manhattan on the D train!—and a short walk from the B35, B38 and B70 bus stops. The 39th Street exit off the Gowanus Expressway/BQE also takes you pretty much to our doorstep (and to the second-busiest Costco in America next door).
Sunday Colloquy: Bewitched, Bothered, or Bewildered? With Jone Johnson Lewis, Interim Clergy Leader
When: Sunday, October 18, 11am-12:30pm
Where: Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture, 53 Prospect Park West at 2nd Street
What: Modern paganism, witches — what do you make of this? Some are bewitched, some bothered, some bewildered. Nearing Halloween, it’s easy to see how disrespected the word “witch” is in our current American culture. Think: Salem witch trials for some history. In some parts of the world, people are still being put to death on suspicion of being witches. What can we all learn from the more public re-emergence of practices and ideas rooted in religions which predate the major monotheisms of the West? What can we learn from the tendency towards witch hunts and witch crazes?
How much: Free.
Morbid Anatomy Flea Market at the Bell House
When: Sunday, October 18, 11am-6pm
Where: The Bell House, 149 7th Street, between 2nd and 3rd Avenues
What: Nothing is better than a lazy Sunday spent at a great flea market; at this one, you’ll find all of your favorite artists, makers and antique peddlers, including Ryan Matthew Cohn (of Science Channel’s “Oddities”) with two tables of osteology and antiquities; Daisy Tainton with her insect shadowboxes and mourning rings; Amber Jolliffe Maykut with her taxidermical curiosities; Elizabeth New and her abject housewares and much more! Keep in mind that the flea market is being held at the Bell House and not the museum because it was so well-attended last time.
How much: $1; add $3 to go to see the Museum Exhibition.
“Grow!” A new show by Spellbound Theatre
When: Sunday, October 18, performance at both 10:00am and 11:15am.
Where: The Old Stone House, 336 3rd Street, between 4th and 5th Avenues
What: Follow the life cycle of an apple seed through four seasons in this lovely, interactive performance for very young children. Young audiences and the storyteller plant a seed together and help it grow, while learning gentle and charming songs and ASL signs to help tell a story of seasonal growth. Recommended for Ages 2-5.
How much: $12 for children. $15 for adults. Tickets are available here.
