Park Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: October 1-4
October is here! If you’re hanging around the Slope this weekend and looking for adventure, we’ve got everything from Afro Peruvian jazz, a reggae dance party, to a lecture on Gothic life. Don’t miss some of our favorite events from around the area:
Corina Bartra Septet
When: Thursday, October 1, 9:30pm
Where: ShapeShifter Lab, 18 Whitwell Place (between 1st and Carroll Streets)
What: Afro Peruvian Jazz and new Latin trends pioneer Corina Bartra brings top notch musicians to performs rhythms from Peru and new Latin trend pieces.
How much: $14.
“Give and Take” by Ian Trask
When: Thursday, October 1 – Sunday, October 4, Thursday: 2pm–6pm, Friday: 2pm–6pm, Saturday: 12pm–6pm, Sunday: 12pm–5pm.
Where: Ground Floor Gallery, 343 5th Street (between 5th and 6th Avenues)
What: This is the last weekend to see this exhibit by Ian Trask, a very talented local visual artist whose unique approach is definitely worth a trip to the gallery.
How much: Free.
You Can’t Kill Me, I’m Already Dead – Notes from a Gothic Life: An Illustrated Lecture with Evan Michelson
When: Friday, October 2, 8pm-10pm
Where: Morbid Anatomy Museum, 424 3rd Avenue at 7th Street
What: For several decades, Evan Michelson has been exploring pleasures of a bookish childhood to the chaos of Industrial Goth. She dashed through the demi-monde of the fetish clubs and into a televised cabinet of morbid curiosities. Through it all goth has been a cultural constant. Come hear a tale of war, pestilence, art, architecture, music, fashion and film.

Reggae Retro 1st Saturdays Dance Party
When: Saturday, October 3, 11pm
Where: Littlefield, 622 Degraw Street, between 3rd and 4th Avenues
What: This once a month event has become a staple on the NYC reggae scene. Since it’s early roots at the dawn of the new millennium circa January 2002, Reggae Retro has become the most anticipated underground reggae event each month. In fact, many are calling Reggae Retro “the dance party that is in the forefront of the keeping roots & culture music in the dancehalls.” Music is provided by Point Break Sound featuring DJ Jase and DJ Silence plus Hypeman Guidance. Plus special guest DJs and performers each month.
How much: $10-$20. Tickets available at the door.
Sunday Platform: How Many Americans Does It Take to Change a Lightbulb?
When: Sunday, October 4, 11am-12:30pm
Where: Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture, 53 Prospect Park West at 2nd Street
What: This discussion is about the recent fight over the push to ban the incandescent light bulb. Curt Collier believes it is indicative of what is wrong with American views on environmentalism. Despite the overwhelming evidence that we need to ban these diminutive energy hogs many Americans cling to the bulb as yet another misguided symbol of the struggle against a supposedly overbearing government. What is really at the heart of this imprudent behavior and how can reframing this debate impact other needed changes as well. With Curt Collier, NY Ethical Society Leader for Environmental Advocacy

Trio, Duo, Trio: Concerts on the Slope
When: Sunday, October 4, 3pm
Where: St. John’s Episcopal Church, 139 St. John’s Place at 7th Avenue
What: Violinist Petteri Iivonen, cellist Benjamin Larsen, and pianist Marja Kaisla play Beethoven’s Piano Trio in E-flat Major, Op. 1, no. 1 and Sibelius’ rarely performed “Korppoo” Piano Trio No. 3 in D Major, JS209. Violinist Mélanie Clapiès and pianist Paul Kerekes present the first work by our 2015-0216 Composer-in-Residence Reena Esmail’s “Jhula Jhule”.
How much: $20 suggested donation.
Smorgasburg
When: Sunday, October 4, 11am-6pm
Where: Breeze Hill, Prospect Park
What: Don’t completely fill up on those food trucks, though, because there are gastronomical delights waiting for you at the Prospect Park Smorgasburg. With 100 vendors featuring prepared and packaged cuisines from all over the world, you’ll definitely want to check it out.
