Park Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: January 7-10
January has come, but you don’t need to be in post-holiday doldrums for long! We have dirty waltzing, hellishly good comedy, and…mulchfest! Don’t miss some of our favorite events from around the area:
Jermaine Fowler: Give ‘Em Hell Tour
When: Thursday, January 7, 7:30pm (Doors) and 8:00pm (Show)
Where: Union Hall, 702 Union Street, at 5th Avenue
What: Jermaine Fowler (TruTV’s Friends of the People and MTV’s Guy Code) has been touring the country since he was 21 with Comedy Central, MTV, College Humor, and Funny or Die. This January he sets to embark on his own nation-wide tour in celebration of his debut comedy special, Give Em Hell, Kid. With Jak Knight.
How much: $8 advance of show. Tickets available here. This event will be mixed seated/standing. Arrive early for best seat selection.
Dirty Waltz Band
When: Friday, January 8, 2 sets begin at 8:00pm
Where: Threes Brewing, 333 Douglass Street, between 3rd and 4th Avenues
What: Dirty Waltz Band is a sexy-yet (sometimes septy-tet) that believes that songs in three-four time and the subsequent gyrations of body, mind and spirit that follow suit are a gateway to embracing and/or unleashing unconscious desires that lead to pure, unadulterated feeling states as evidenced by smiling, hollering, weeping, giggling, kissing, hugging, hair flipping, toe-tapping, swaying, guffawing, and sometimes even dancing. Embrace the waltz, dirty style. Their motto: Where there is a will there is a waltz.
How much: $10 cover, at the door.
Mulchfest 2016
When: Saturday, January 9 and Sunday, January 10, 10:00am-2:00pm
Where: Prospect Park, Entrance at 3rd Street and Entrance at Park Circle
What: Join the Prospect Park Alliance for Mulchfest! Bring your holiday tree to Prospect Park, where it will go through a chipper and transform into environment-friendly mulch. Plus, you can take some home for your own yard or garden. Please remove all decorations from the trees.
Closing Weekend and Artist and Juror Talk For 11th Annual Small Works Show
When: Thursday, January 7 and Friday, January 8, 4:00-7:00pm; Saturday, January 9 and Sunday, January 10, 11:00am-7:00pm
Where: 440 Gallery, 440 6th Avenue, between 9th and 10th Streets
What: Great things definitely come in small packages at 440 Gallery this month, where the popular Small Works Show – made up of pieces that are all under 12″ – returns on Thursday night. If you can’t make it to the opening reception, the show runs through January 10. Visit the 440 Gallery website for more information, and a list of the artists featured in this year’s show. Join Small Works Show juror Amy Williams and participating artists Christina Baril, Ashley Thompson, and Meghan Willis for a panel discussion about art, process and materials on Sunday, January 10, 2:00-3:00pm

House of Wax: Anatomical, Pathological, and Ethnographic Waxworks from Castan’s Panopticum, Berlin, 1869-1922
When: Saturday, January 9 and Sunday, January 10, 12-6pm
Where: Morbid Anatomy Museum, 424 3rd Avenue at 7th Street
What: House of Wax will exhibit a selection of waxworks once shown as part of Castan’s Berlin-based Panopticum (1869-1922). The full collection, never before exhibited in the US, will later be installed at the forthcoming Alamo Drafthouse in Downtown Brooklyn.
How much: Regular admission fees: Admission to the exhibition & library is $5. Seniors and students are $3, and children 12 and under are free.
Smorgasburg and The Brooklyn Flea at Industry City
When: Saturday, January 9 and Sunday, January 10, 10am-6pm
Where: Industry City, 241 37th Street (between 2nd and 3rd Avenues)
What: Smorgasburg has moved down to the booming Industry City, which may be new territory for you. While the move was announced some time ago, Industry City is housing both Smorgasburg and The Brooklyn Flea every Saturday and Sunday until March 27, 2016. Keep in mind that Industry City is big — the entrance address is 241 37th Street. This is just two blocks from the 36th Street D/N/R subway station—only two stops from Manhattan on the D train!—and a short walk from the B35, B38 and B70 bus stops. The 39th Street exit off the Gowanus Expressway/BQE also takes you pretty much to their doorstep (and to the second-busiest Costco in America next door).
Sunday Colloquy: Communication, Commitment, and Community
When: Sunday, Sunday, January 10, 11am-12:30pm
Where: Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture, 53 Prospect Park West at 2nd Street
What: Rollo May wrote, “Communication leads to community, that is, to understanding, intimacy and mutual valuing.” Communication is also central to ethics: we need to understand each other in order to figure out how to treat others. Communication, done well makes that easier; communication, done poorly, makes that more difficult. Interim Clergy Leader Jone Johnson Lewis will explore the relationships between communication, commitment, community and Ethical Culture.
