December is in full gear! We have horror movie posters, the “world’s largest menorah,” and a jamboree! Don’t miss some of our favorite events from around the area:
It Came From The Gowanus Canal: A Horror Movie Poster Launch Party
When: Thursday, December 10, 7-10pm
Where: Gowanus Souvenir Shop, 543 Union Street (the entrance is on Nevins Street, and down the alley, and on the left)
What: The recently opened Gowanus Souvenir Shop has commissioned an exclusive faux movie poster for the Tales of the Night Watchman story, “It Came from the Gowanus Canal”. Come celebrate as we unleash it from the murky depths this holiday season! Series creators Dave Kelly and Lara Antal will be in attendence! “Tales of the Night Watchman” is published by So What? Press.

Opening Reception For 11th Annual Small Works Show
When: Thursday, December 10, 6pm to 9pm
Where: 440 Gallery, 440 6th Avenue, between 9th and 10th Streets
What: Great things definitely come in small packages at 440 Gallery this month, where the popular Small Works Show – made up of pieces that are all under 12″ – returns on Thursday night. If you can’t make it to the opening reception, the show runs through January 10. Visit the 440 Gallery website for more information, and a list of the artists featured in this year’s show.
How much: Free!
NYC Rent Freeze Outreach Event For Seniors
When: Friday, December 11, 11am to 4pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: If you’re at least 62-years-old, you may be eligible to have your rent frozen through the NYC Rent Freeze Program (SCRIE). To see if you qualify, visit the NYC Department of Finance website.
How much: Free.
15th Annual Jingle Bell Jamboree
When: Saturday, December 12, 7:00-8:30pm
Where: Congregation Beth Elohim, 274 Garfield Place (at 8th Avenue)
What: The Park Slope Civic Council will be collecting unwrapped toys for our Toys For Tots annual giving program.
How much: $10, suggested donation.
House of Wax: Anatomical, Pathological, and Ethnographic Waxworks from Castan’s Panopticum, Berlin, 1869-1922
When: Saturday, December 12 and Sunday, December 13, 12-6pm
Where: Morbid Anatomy Museum, 424 3rd Avenue at 7th Street
What: House of Wax will exhibit a selection of waxworks once shown as part of Castan’s Berlin-based Panopticum (1869-1922). The full collection, never before exhibited in the US, will later be installed at the forthcoming Alamo Drafthouse in Downtown Brooklyn.
How much: Regular admission fees: Admission to the exhibition & library is $5. Seniors and students are $3, and children 12 and under are free.
Smorgasburg and The Brooklyn Flea at Industry City
When: Saturday, December 12 and Sunday, December 13, 10am-6pm
Where: Industry City, 241 37th Street (between 2nd and 3rd Avenues)
What: Smorgasburg has moved down to the booming Industry City, which may be new territory for you. While the move was announced some time ago, Industry City is housing both Smorgasburg and The Brooklyn Flea every Saturday and Sunday until March 27, 2016. Keep in mind that Industry City is big — the entrance address is 241 37th Street. This is just two blocks from the 36th Street D/N/R subway station—only two stops from Manhattan on the D train!—and a short walk from the B35, B38 and B70 bus stops. The 39th Street exit off the Gowanus Expressway/BQE also takes you pretty much to our doorstep (and to the second-busiest Costco in America next door).
Sunday Colloquy: Honest Examination of Lying with Emily Newman
When: Sunday, December 13, 11am-12:30pm
Where: Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture, 53 Prospect Park West at 2nd Street
What: Is lying ethical? We are surrounded by falsehoods, exaggerations, denial, and sarcasm; that affect our judgment and shape our actions for better and worse. We must first learn what is a lie, how are they used and viewed in society, and why do we lie. Together we will explore lying and try to find the truest, most honest answer. Emily Newman is the Communications Coordinator of the American Ethical Union, Secretary of the National Ethical Service at the United Nations, and a member of the Future of Ethical Societies (FES). She grew up in Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture, and is a member there and at the New York Society for Ethical Culture.

Threes Brewing Holiday Market
When: Sunday, December 13, 12:00-6:00pm
Where: Threes Brewing, 333 Douglas Street (between 3rd and 4th Avenues)
What: A fun and festive day for friends & family to venture out to their newly winterized outdoor garden, which will include 20 local vendors. They’ll be featuring crafts, gifts, attire, edible treats, wreathes, graphics, accessories, and more! Additionally, Sure Shot Records have retooled their catalog with some holiday surprises – and offer the chance to spin your purchases inside. Grab a mulled wine or beer, enjoy a special Tex-Mex brunch from our friends at Roberta’s Pizza and stay for bluegrass by The Tumble (in the main bar from 4-7pm).
Lighting Of The World’s Largest Menorah
When: Daily at 6pm from Sunday, December 6-Sunday, December 13
Where: Grand Army Plaza, Prospect Heights
What: Chabad of Park Slope sets up their annual menorah, which they claim is the “world’s largest.” Look out for a free concert starting at 5pm on the first night, plus free latkes and children’s entertainment.
How Much: Free admission.
