Park Slope Weekend Events: June 4-7
Looking for something to do this weekend? With everything from 90s music and tango lessons, to unusual creatures and opera, you won’t have to go far for fun. Below are some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood.

Women’s Roles: Two Interactive Workshops With Performer Heather Harpham
When: Thursday, June 4, 6-7:30pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Join writer and performer Heather Harpham at the Park Slope Library Thursday for an interactive performance workshop that “makes women’s historical, contemporary, and evolving social roles come to life.” Adults are welcome and encouraged to participate.
How much: Free.
Opera on Tap
When: Friday, June 5, 6pm-9pm
Where: Old Stone House, 336 3rd Street between 4th and 5th avenues
What: Dance along as Opera on Tap’s New Brewers and the Dirty, Sexy, Jazzy Ensemble sing hot new arrangements of classic opera tunes. All benefiting opera education for kids and adults.
How much: $25-100, available in advance.
Evolution of the Bone People: Art Reception
When: Friday, June 5, 6pm
Where: Littlefield, 622 Degraw Street, between 3rd and 4th avenues
What: Explore the fascinating work of South American artist Abbyssinian Carto and his captivation with bones and skeletons. The Brooklyn-based artist’s current work playfully combines and juxtaposes bones of various origins to suggest a narrative or to invent new anatomies.
How much: Free.
Lola Star’s Dreamland Roller Disco
When: Friday, June 5, 7:30pm
Where: LeFrak Center, Lakeside
What: If you and the girls just want to have fun, show your love for Lauper this Friday at Lakeside, where Dreamland Roller Disco is all about ’80s pop queens. Note that admission is restricted to guests ages 21 and older. For more information, or to buy tickets in advance, visit the Dreamland website.
How much: $18 (includes admission and skate rental).
Coffee Bark
When: Saturday, June 6, 7am-9am
Where: Meadow beside the Picnic House in Prospect Park (Enter at PPW and 3rd Street)
What: It’s the first Saturday of the month, which can only mean one thing – Coffee Bark with FIDO. There will be treats for dogs (and their owners), as well as information on off-leash activities.
How much: Free.
Tango Lessons at the Library
When: Saturday, June 6, 10am-12pm
Where: Central Library, Dweck Center, 10 Grand Army Plaza
What: Learn the fundamentals of one of the world’s most dramatic dances at this fun informal series, brought to you by the IATI Theater. Lessons are in English and Spanish.
How much: Free, but space is limited so arrive early.
Local Produce
When: Saturday, June 6, 10am-6pm
Where: Union Street between 5th and 6th avenues
What: Dance in the street with Spoke the Hub’s mini-festival featuring music and dancing from around the world. Fun for all ages.
How much: Free.
History In Your Hands: Flax To Linen
When: Saturdays and Sundays in June, 2-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Did you know that Lefferts House has a flax crop? This month, the whole family is invited to come and give the tools used to process flax fibers into linen cloth a try. Kids can also sew a small linen pouch to take home.
How much: $3 suggested donation.
Songs for Unusual Creatures
When: Saturday, June 6, 4pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street near 6th Avenue
What: Quirky author and composer Michael Hearst, along with his five-piece band, presents Songs For Unusual Creatures: a highly-geeky A/V presentation of some of the most bizarre animals that roam the planet. The creatures are brought to life with such odd-ball instruments as theremin, claviola, and stylophone.
How much: $10 (strongly) suggested donation.
The Wonderful World of Boning: Sex Ed with a Sense of Humor
When: Saturday, June 6, 7pm
Where: Union Hall, 702 Union Street near 5th Avenue
What: In the Wonderful World of Boning, writer, sex educator, and funny lady Lux Alptraum teams up with comedian friends to take a tour of classic sex education videos, where some of America’s best community theater actors teach our nation’s youth all about puberty, sexual health, and what’s happening down at the STI clinic.
How much: $8, tickets available in advance.
Party Like It’s 1999: 20 Years Since Jagged Little Pill Edition
When: Saturday, June 6, 10pm
Where: The Bell House, 149 7th Street at 2nd Avenue
What: To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Alanis Morrissette’s breakthrough album, The Bell House will be playing all six singles from the album, plus the usual mix of rock, R&B, hip hop and dance tunes from from the ’90s.
How much: Free.
Food Truck Rally
When: Sunday, June 7, 11am-5pm
Where: Grand Army Plaza
What: Have the munchies? Stop by Prospect Park on Sunday, and nosh on goodies from some of the city’s best food trucks.
