Park Slope Weekday Events Spotlight: November 9-11
We may just be cooling down and settling in to Fall, but there’s no settling with all of the events this week! With everything from stand-up comedy, a trained anatomist’s book launch, to tango classes, there’s plenty going on in Park Slope this week. Below are some of our favorite events from around the area.

Tango Dance Classes

Brooklyn By The Book Presents: Neil Gaiman in Conversation with Junot Diaz
When: Monday, October 9, 7:30pm
Where: Congregation Beth Elohim, 274 Garfield Place (at 8th Avenue)
What: New York Times best-selling writer Neil Gaiman returns to The Sandman with a prequel story to his trailblazing series in The Sandman: Overture Deluxe Edition, out on November 10. Rendered in artist JH Williams III’s lush panoramas, The Sandman: Overture takes readers from the birth of the galaxy to Morpheus’s capture, before the events of The Sandman #1, and sheds new light on Gaiman’s rich mythological canon. In conversation with novelist and Pulitzer Prize winner Junot Diaz, celebrate the release of Gaiman’s magnum opus with the author. For the first time in years, Neil will be signing The Sandman after the event. He will only be signing The Sandman Overture Deluxe hardcovers available for sale at this event. Pre-signed books will also be available for purchase from Community Bookstore.

Comedy Central Present: Seven Minutes in Purgatory
When: Tuesday, November 10, 8:00pm (doors), 9:00pm (show)
Where: Littlefield, 622 Degraw Street (between 3rd and 4th Avenues)
What: Seven Minutes in Purgatory challenges comedians to perform directly to a camera alone in a soundproof room, while audience members watch a live feed in another room. This social experiment/comedy show offers a chance to watch performers hilariously and awkwardly attempt to do their act without the benefit of audience feedback. The show is based in Los Angeles, and has featured guests like Kyle Kinane, Matt Braunger, and Sara Schaefer, and host/co-creator Ian Abramson has toured the show around the country, to cities like Chicago, Denver, and Atlanta.The Laugh Button called the show “one of the coolest and most creative additions to the comedy world,” and it’s been hailed by The AV Club as “hilarious.”

Comedians Chris Gethard: Career Suicide
When: Tuesday, November 10, 7:30pm (Doors) and 8:00 (Show)
Where: Union Hall, 702 Union Street (at 5th Avenue)
What: Chris Gethard performs an hour of stand up focusing on suicide, alcoholism, and all the other funniest parts of life. You may know Chris from his cult hit talk show “The Chris Gethard Show”, or as Ilana’s boss Todd on “Broad City”, or from his recent appearance in the critically praised “12 Angry Men Inside Amy Schumer” episode of Amy Schumer’s show on Comedy Central. He’s been heard a couple times on This American Life and was once named one of Variety’s Ten Comics to Watch.

‘Anatomy in Black’: A Book Launch Party and Illustrated Lecture with Emily Evans
When: Wednesday, November 11, 8pm
Where: Morbid Anatomy Museum, 424 3rd Avenue (at 7th Street)
What: Anatomist and artist Emily Evans returns to the Morbid Anatomy Museum to celebrate the release of her new book “Anatomy in Black”; the ultimate anatomy coffee table book. Emily is a trained anatomist and is a senior demonstrator of anatomy at Cambridge University, UK. Alongside teaching anatomy, she has run her own medical illustration business in London for the last 12 years illustrating mostly anatomy and surgery books.

Weekly Raga Jam Session
When: Wednesday, November 11, 8:30pm
Where: ShapeShifter Lab, 18 Whitwell Place (between 1st and Carroll Streets)
What: October begins BRM’s month long residency at the widely respected performance art space, Shapeshifter Lab. We kick it off with our “BRM Residency Launch Party” on Oct 7 featuring an outstanding Hindustani classical concert, followed by raga-rooted grooves from the BRM All-Stars. The rest of the month stays true to BRM’s wide-ranging offerings, with a sitar recital from a distinguished artist touring from India, a collaboration of south Indian percussion with drupad vocals and electronics, and the beautiful cross-over sounds of a Brooklyn-based Sufi singer. All featured acts are followed by the Raga Jam Session.

Veterans Day In Prospect Park
When: Wednesday, November 11
Where: Prospect Park
What: Kids have the day off of school on Wednesday? From nature events at the Audubon Center to potato sack races at Lefferts House, Prospect Park is ready to entertain the family during the Veterans Day holiday.
How much: Nature programs: free, Lefferts House: $3 suggested donation, and carousel: $2 per ride.
