Nope. Nope. Nope. No need for the winter blues. We have a bevy of offerings — including slavic soul, a Kubrick classic for free, and a farm on Mars. Below are some of our favorite events from around the area.

Comedy Open Mic Night
When: Monday, January 11, 6:30pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Looking for a fantastic spot to test out your new material? Make your way to Freddy’s for their weekly open mic comedy night. Register early by emailing dirtyhoecomedy@gmail.com. Walk-ins are also welcome on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign-up begins at 6pm, and the first comic hits the stage at 6:30pm.
How much: No cover, but comics must purchase at least one item from the bar for a 7-minute set.
Halyards Cinemateque – Full Metal Jacket + Trivia
When: Monday, January 11, 7:30pm
Where: Halyard’s, 406 3rd Avenue at 6th Street
What: The Kubrick classic begins at 8:30, when the popcorn is free. The trivia begins at 7:30pm
How much: Free.
Pre-Winter JazzFest Jazz Composer Summit with Ken Thomson Sextet
When: Tuesday, January 12, 8:15pm
Where: ShapeShifter Lab, 18 Whitwell Place (between 1st and Carroll Streets)
What: The Ken Thomson Sextet begins the night, followed by the Mike McGinnis Road*Trip Band at 9:15pm.
How much: $10, at the door.
The Show Show with Jean Grae
When: Tuesday, January 12, 7:30pm (door), 8:00pm (show)
Where: Union Hall, 702 Union Street and 5th Avenue
What: A live talk show w/super special (sometimes surprise!) guests, music, news, comedy. Because someone needs to say what we’re all thinking. The excellent line-up features Todd Barry, Starlee Kine, Jean Grae, Donwill, Quelle Chris, and Fernanda Meier.
How much: $10, tickets available in advance. 21 and over. This event will be mixed seated/standing. Arrive early for best seat selection.
Rumpelstiltskin’s Algae: Future Food Utopias in that Neo-Pastoral Farm City We Call New York, an illustrated lecture with Wythe Marschal
When: Tuesday, January 12, 7:00-10:00pm
Where: Morbid Anatomy Museum, 424 3rd Avenue (at 7th Street)
What: Meat brewed like beer, farms on top of industrial warehouses, artisanal bacteria, farms on Mars, genetically engineered super salmon, Soylent (but not people), delicious delicious insects… These are not (only) the tropes of science fiction, but the promises of startups, established companies, and labs in big American cities. Historian of biotechnology Wythe Marschall will introduce some of these future food projects and unpack the futures they seek to invent or avoid.
How much: $8, tickets available in advance.
Slavic Soul Party
When: Wednesday, January 13, 9pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street near 6th Avenue
What: If you’re looking for “fiery Balkan brass, throbbing funk grooves, Gypsy accordion wizardry, and virtuoso jazz chops,” don’t miss Slavic Soul Party, hitting the Barbes stage on Wednesday night.
How much: $10 (strongly) suggested donation.
Beyond the Birds and the Bees: How to Talk to Your Kids About Puberty, Body Changes, and Sex, with Kelli Dunham
When: Wednesday, January 13, 7:30pm-9pm
Where: Please, 557 5th Avenue at 15th Street
What: Please will offer a workshop on an important and challenging matter — talking to your kids about “the birds and the bees.” The workshop for parents will be led by nurse/best-selling author Kelli Dunham. Check out a preview of the event here.
