Park Slope Songwriter Makes History With Double-EGOT
PARK SLOPE/HOLLYWOOD – Songwriter Robert Lopez has made history before, but as of last night’s 90th Academy Awards, he stands alone with a singular accomplishment: the first person ever to win the “Double EGOT.”
The EGOT, or “Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony” is short for artists who have managed to win one each of the prestigious awards. Only 12 people have accomplished this “grand slam” of entertainment.
Lopez, who lives in Park Slope with his wife and daughters, was not only the youngest person ever to notch all 4 major wins, he was also the fastest, locking down the title in the span of 10 years.
Now, he’s rounded the bases a second time, winning an Oscar last night for Best Original Song: “Remember Me,” from the smash-hit Disney animation Coco. He co-wrote the song with his wife, Kristen Anderson-Lopez, who shouted out Brooklyn as the two took the stage last night to receive their awards.
Four years earlier, the Lopez duo won their first Oscar in the same category, for the inescapable juggernaut that was “Let It Go” from Frozen, a song every parent with a child under 10 has seared into their memory.
But the most recent musical successes are just a small part of Lopez’s expansive career. He was the co-creator of legendary Broadway musicals “Avenue Q” and “The Book of Mormon,” winning Tony Awards for both.
Just another mega-talented neighbor that proves for talent, hard work and dedication, Brooklyn can’t be beat!
