Park Slope Planner: The Best Events June 11-14

Summertime fun is definitely getting into full swing this weekend, as we’ve got three Celebrate Brooklyn shows in Prospect Park, plus the Brooklyn Pride Parade marches through the neighborhood and there’s a concert on an outdoor Sing for Hope piano! Details on those, and more, events below.

How To Be A Woman: Solo Show And Interactive Workshop For Teenage Girls And Their Mothers With Heather Harpham
When: Thursday, June 11, 6pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue
What: Join writer and performer Heather Harpham for an interactive performance workshop that “makes women’s historical, contemporary, and evolving social roles come to life.” All adults are welcome, especially mothers and their teenage daughters.
How much: Free!

Flower Arranging Workshop
When: Thursday, June 11, 7:30pm
Where: Brooklyn Hearth Realty, 43 5th Avenue
What: Ditmas Park flower shop Stems will be in the neighborhood to teach you how to be a florist for a day. Tickets include materials and drinks.
How much: $75, tickets available in advance.

Celebrate Brooklyn: Krosfyah Featuring Special Guests Lead Pipe & Saddis / Something Positive
When: Thursday, June 11, 7:30pm
Where: Bandshell, Prospect Park at the 9th Street/Prospect Park West entrance
What: This should be a good show for getting down on the lawn, with the soca rhythms of Krosfyah and Lead Pipe & Saddis, plus the Brooklyn-based dance and music troupe Something Positive.
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, June 12, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free!

Celebrate Brooklyn: Esperanza Spalding Presents: Emily’s D+Evolution / José James
When: Friday, June 12, 7:30pm
Where: Bandshell, Prospect Park at the 9th Street/Prospect Park West entrance
What: Expect all new material from Esperanza Spalding’s new project, which she says “unfolds as live musical vignettes.” Opening is José James, whose music the Times describes as sounding “like the result of the black-pop continuum, jazz and soul and hip-hop and R&B, slow cooked for 50 years.”
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Lola Star’s Dreamland Roller Disco
When: Friday, June 12, 7:30pm
Where: LeFrak Center, Lakeside
What: The theme of this week’s roller skating party is “We are the Champions – Freddie Mercury and Queen,” which can only mean lots of short shorts, mustaches, and great music for rolling around the rink to. For more information, or to buy tickets in advance, visit the Dreamland website.
How much: $18 (includes admission and skate rental).

Tango Workshops
When: Saturday, June 13, 10am-12pm
Where: Central Library, Dweck Center, 10 Grand Army Plaza
What: Learn the fundamentals of one of a dramatic dance at this fun, informal series from the IATI Theater. Lessons are in English and Spanish, and there are two sessions: 10-11am is for beginners, and 11am-12pm is for advanced dancers.
How much: Free, but space is limited, so arrive early, and bring your library card for admission.

Brooklyn Pride Festival & Twilight Parade
When: Saturday, June 13, 11am
Where: 5th Avenue
What: The annual parade heads down 5th Avenue to 9th Street at 7:30pm, with a festival between 3rd and 9th from 11am-5pm, which will include two stages with different entertainment lined up, fun for the kids at the Old Stone House, plus shopping, food, and beer gardens. Also, look out for neighbor and Mayor de Blasio, who is expected to march.
How much: Free!

Celebrate Brooklyn: Lucius / Luke Temple / Pavo Pavo
When: Saturday, June 13, 7pm
Where: Bandshell, Prospect Park at the 9th Street/Prospect Park West entrance
What: Brookyn-based Lucius brings vocal harmonies, infectious hooks, and dance-inducing percussion to the park. Opening for them are Luke Temple and Pavo Pavo, who are both also representing our great borough.
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Discosynthesis
When: Saturday, June 13, 11:59pm
Where: Union Hall, 702 Union Street
What: Looking for a place to dance after the Twilight Parade? This twice-monthly party, featuring a blend of disco, new wave, pop, and house music, is a good (and free!) option.
How much: Free!

Sing For Hope Pianos Performance
When: Sunday, June 14, 1-3:45pm
Where: The Old Stone House, 336 3rd Street
What: There’s a cool piano set up in the park — just through June 21! — and this will be an awesome chance to hear it played by some independent musicians, in a concert curated by Park Slope dad and Grammy-award winning composer, Herschel Garfein. Kids are welcome!
How much: Free!

Dan Joseph Ensemble
When: Sunday, June 14, 7pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street
What: Hear the post-minimal chamber compositions of the Dan Joseph Ensemble, returning to the stage in its classic early lineup for the first time since 2013 to revisit works from its original repertoire. Featuring Tom Chiu (violin), Loren Dempster (cello), Marija Ilic (harpsichord), guest John Ingle (saxophone) and the composer on hammer dulcimer, the group will perform Archaea Quartet, Lotus Quintet, and selected duos.
How much: $10 strongly suggested donation.
