It may surprise some that school teachers at times have to dip into their own wallets to provide school supplies or field trips for their students. This is very much the case at PS 446 in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn.

According to DNAinfo, Park Slope’s PS 321 fundraised to provide school supplies for students and teachers at PS 446. “Fourth- and fifth-grade parents at P.S. 321 order classroom supplies for their school from an online vendor, and this year parents had the option to throw in an extra $20 to buy a box of supplies for P.S. 446,” writes DNAinfo. “Parents donated enough for 204 boxes, or 70 percent of P.S. 446’s student body, according to P.S. 321 leaders.”

The two schools differ widely in terms of fiscal realities of the students. DNAinfo notes that “87 percent of students come from households living in poverty, according to the Department of Education. The DOE measures poverty based on whether a student qualifies for either free or reduced price lunch or qualifies for public benefits such as food stamps. At P.S. 321, 7.5 percent of students live in poverty.”

PS 321 continues to find opportunities to support PS 446, which is their “learning partner” school. The PS 321 website announced that families will be able to donate books to students at PS 446 through the Scholastic Book Fair that will take place between November 17-24.

If you or your organization are interested in donating to PS 446, you can visit the DonorsChoose website section specifically for the school.
