P.S. 32 The Samuel Mills Sprole School at 317 Hoyt Street has been operating with trailer classrooms for about 15 years. Indoor classroom space is about to get a jolt at the pre-K through 5th grade school as a plan to add over 56,000 square-foot building is moving forward.

Applications have been filed by the New York City School Construction Authority (SCA) for the three-story building which will have 420 Union Street as its address. The new site will be a 46-foot-tall structure with 56,856 square feet of space, YIMBY reported.

In October 2015, Council Member Brad Lander announced that the DOE had agreed to a study for a building. “I’m pleased to report that they are now moving forward to build a 436-seat addition there,” Lander’s statement said. “It will take a few years for this addition to be built, of course, and we will need to decide how to use that new capacity to meet our community’s growing need. It won’t solve all our problems, but it’s a very good step forward.”

DNAinfo reported that in a capital plan amendment by the Department of Eductions for 2015-2019, 640 seats would be added in the Gowanus, Carroll Gardens, and Red Hook neighborhoods.

The new building will include administrative offices and a cafeteria on the ground floor and classrooms on the second and third floors, YIMBY reported. In addition, a playground will also be located on the second floor.

Edelman Sultan Knox Wood Architects will design the building. The firm has designed other education institutions throughout New York City, including New Settlement Community Campus in the Bronx, P.S. 63 / Neighborhood School Library in Manhattan, and O’Dwyer Gardens Community Center in Coney Island.
