Starter kits for the city’s organic waste recycling pilot, set to begin October 7, were delivered to participating homes in South Slope, Greenwood Heights and Windsor Terrace this week. The kits include a brown organics bin, a small kitchen container, and a starter supply of DSNY-approved compostable liners.

Already operating in Staten Island, the pilot allows residents in single family homes to place food scraps, food soiled paper, and small amounts of yard waste in special bins provided by the city. The organic waste will be composted and used to fertilize local gardens, parks, and street trees.

Now that it’s getting real and the bins are here, what are your thoughts on the recycling pilot? Fantastic forward thinking on the part of NYC, or a waste of time and resources? What are your reasons for participating (or not participating)?
