Windsor Terrace, South Slope, and Greenwood Heights homes planning to participate in the city’s upcoming organic waste collection pilot program can look forward to an early October start, according to a map posted by Concerned Citizens of Greenwood Heights.

Organic waste pickups will occur weekly on your current recycling day, with the first one scheduled for the zone between 8th Avenue and 11th Avenue/15th Street and 20th Street on Monday, October 7. Windsor Terrace, between 11th Avenue and Caton Avenue will take place on Tuesday, October 8. South Slope/Greenwood Heights, between 6th Avenue and 8th Avenue/15th Street to 23rd Street will follow on Wednesday, October 9.

Already operating in Staten Island, the pilot allows residents in single family homes to place food scraps, food soiled paper, and small amounts of yard waste in special bins provided by the city. The organic waste will be composted and used to fertilize local gardens, parks, and street trees.

Starter kits, which include a brown organics bin, a small kitchen container, and a starter supply of DSNY-approved compostable liners will be delivered to participating homes in September.
