At approximately 10:30pm on Saturday, September 16, NYPD Highway Patrol responded to an incident on the eastbound Belt Parkway near Exit 2 where they found a collision involving three vehicles, police say.

The preliminary investigation states that the 57-year-old driver of a 2015 Nissan was traveling east on the Belt Parkway when he rear-ended two cars stopped in traffic—a 2002 Honda driven by a 32-year-old male and a 2015 Maserati driven by a 35-year-old male.

A 33-year-old passenger sitting behind the driver in the Nissan, Nicholas Aponick of Gravesend, sustained neck and back injuries and was transported to Lutheran Hospital by EMS. He died from his injuries a week later on September 23, according to police.

Another rear passenger in the Nissan was also transported to Lutheran Hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the Honda and his front passenger were taken to Lutheran Hospital as well with non-life threatening injuries.

The Maserati driver and his passenger were not injured during the incident.

No arrests have been made. The investigation is ongoing.
