Old Sign Uncovered on Church Ave

It’s not exactly ancient history, but when the new owners of the space at 1029 Church Avenue, on the corner of Stratford, took down an old sign and installed a new awning, they uncovered the sign from an iteration of the laundromat from many years back.

You can see it peeking out from under the Five Star Laundromat’s new awning.

And when you look up, both the Church Avenue side and the Stratford sign have these KL Laundromat signs, which themselves look like they were painted over other signs–you can see the faint words “double load” under the KL.

Property records list the likely namesake Kong Lai as the owner of the property from 1978 to 1983. At some point after that, the laundromat became the Ying Laundromat–Gock Ying Ng bought the property from Lai. Ng sold the building in 1993.

The space has been the Best Corner Laundromat since at least 2010. You can see below in a shot from Google street view how the most recent signs covered up the KL signs.

Anyone remember it back when it was KL?

And have you noticed if the new place is open yet? I saw them doing work inside a few weeks ago, but haven’t noticed them open. Let us know if you try it (and if they actually do pick-up and delivery, which would answer one neighbor’s question).
