Officers Smash Open Car Window On Avenue U To Rescue Trapped Child

Officers from the 61st Precinct smashed open a car window on Sunday, August 2, to rescue a two-year-old child trapped inside after the mother accidentally locked herself out of the vehicle.

The incident happened on Avenue U, near East 26th Street, the 61st Precinct reported. A video posted by the precinct on Twitter shows Officer James Farah (name spelled incorrectly in the tweet) smashing the the driver’s side window with a tire iron and then breaking off the glass to open the door. Officer Thomas Redmond and Sergeant Martin Potoma also assisted in the rescue.

Emergency responders were at the scene but the child was unharmed, according to the precinct.

An officer from the precinct’s community affairs division said the mother accidentally left her keys in the ignition when she got out of the car. After she went around the vehicle to get her child, she found that all the doors had locked automatically.

The mother asked someone to call the police for assistance, according to the precinct, and when police arrived another bystander provided Farah with the tire iron used in the video.
