Ocean Parkway Reinvented As Ocean Parking Lot

Well, if mountains of snow aren’t in your way, parked cars will be. And we’re not talking about those abandoned in the middle of streets during the storm.

It appears drivers are beginning to create new parking lanes on large avenues as most parking spaces remain packed with snow.

Community Board 15 Chairperson Theresa Scavo sent over these photos of Ocean Parkway, where drivers have converted the right turn lanes, left turn lanes and striped median into parking spaces. A police vehicle is also seen photographed in one of these new spaces.

The photos above and below were taken on Ocean Parkway and Avenue I, but Scavo said the situation runs almost the entire length of Ocean Parkway. On other major roadways, similar situations are emerging. On streets like Oriental Boulevard, Kings Highway and Coney Island Avenue, drivers are getting creative with the way they park, according to Scavo.

Most of the roadways affected by this are being reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction as the others are converted for parking uses.
