NYPD Employee Killed By Truck Tire On Gowanus Expressway

BAY RIDGE – A NYPD maintenance worker was killed on his way to work Wednesday morning after a tire flew off a truck and smashed into his vehicle on the Gowanus Expressway.

The incident occurred just after 6:30am, a police representative said. The 64-year-old male victim was driving a Toyota RAV4 eastbound in the HOV lane, “near 7th Avenue just north of Fort Hamilton Parkway” according to WCBS 880, when the tire of a private sanitation truck traveling westbound became unhinged and hurtled into his car. The impact of the tire caused the driver to slam his SUV into a barrier.

The driver was taken to NYU Langone Hospital in Sunset Park with head trauma but could not be saved, according to the NYPD. His identity has not yet been released.

The driver of the truck remained on the scene and was not immediately charged. The investigation is ongoing.
