NYPD Deems Man’s Death At Clocktower Building In June A Homicide

[UPDATED: Thursday, August 24, 2017 at 10:00am] DUMBO – After an investigation and an autopsy, the NYPD have announced that the death of 57-year-old financier, Neil Smith, in June is now being investigated as a homicide.

Smith was found dead in his luxury Clocktower Building home located at 1 Main Street in DUMBO on June 19. A friend visiting from Colombia who was staying with Smith discovered the victim’s body lying in bed with a wet towel over his face and a pillow over his head, according to the New York Daily News. The city medical examiner has determined his death was caused by asphyxiation, the article adds.

Smith’s friend claims that a man visited the apartment at approximately 1:30am on June 18 for what the paper describes as a “late-night hookup.” The friend did not see Smith again until the next day when he found his body.

Surveillance video footage shows an unidentified man entering the building at around 1:30am on June 18 accompanied by a woman. The woman did not enter the residence and the man stayed for approximately fifty minutes, the paper states.

No arrests have been made, according to the police. The investigation is ongoing.

The body of Neil Smith was discovered at approximately 1:45pm on Monday, June 19, in his fourth floor apartment located at 1 Main Street, according to the police. The residence is located in the Clocktower condominium building.

Smith was unconscious and unresponsive on a bed when police arrived to his home. EMS pronounced him deceased at the scene.

An investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made in connection to the incident, police say. A medical examiner will determine the cause of Smith’s death.
