Coney Island’s Gerald J. Carey Gardens three-building, 51-unit public housing complex is getting a new community center in the middle of its buildings at 2920 West 23rd Street.

The applicant of record, Manhattan based Nelligan White Architects, has filed to build a new three-story building, to contain a community center and a “heating plant” for the New York City Housing Authority.

The facility will have mechanical sections — a boiler hall, meter rooms, an electrical room, and a generator room — as well as community areas — a multi purpose room, a club room, lockers, a pantry, a lobby, and accessory offices. On the third floor there will be a playground and the roof will have a basketball court and community garden.

According to the complex’s filings history at the Department of Buildings, there has been a large quantity of structural work on the site, especially in the past few years. Currently, a partial stop work order exists on the complex for the “failure to safeguard all persons and properties” in 2014.

The center will be built on what is currently a parking lot.
