Nuteria: Now Closed?

Nuteria: Now Closed?
nuteria: closed?

It looks like our Nutella-themed shop on 5th Avenue may be no more.

After a short but tumultuous lifespan, Nuteria, located at 82 5th Avenue, between St Marks and Warren, appears to have closed for good — or, at least, it hasn’t been open any of the times we’ve passed by in the past couple weeks, which has been the same for local tipster J. Its page on Google+ notes it has closed, its website is down, and calls to its number go straight to voicemail. Signs posted on the door last week noted they’d be at the Mysterland festival upstate over this past holiday weekend, but didn’t say anything about when we might see them again in this space. Has anyone seen them open recently?

Nuteria was initially supposed to open as a Nutella-riffic cafe called as Nutelleria last fall, but then the opening was delayed, and when they finally did open, the name had been changed — reportedly because Nutella’s parent company, Ferrero wasn’t happy with the infringement. Then in February, the company sued Nuteria for monetary damages and to get the name changed, again.

And while people were pretty psyched initially, reviews on Yelp, at least, were not exactly stellar — though some people seemed to find something to like about it, like their gluten-free crepes and Nutella hot chocolate, others were less impressed, put off by the price, size of the space, and general quality of the food.

We’ll update if we hear more, and if you know what’s up, let us know in the comments or at editor@bklyner.com.
