Now Closed: Brooklyn Proper

After being open only five months, Brooklyn Proper closed it doors just before Christmas.

As a commenter noted on our roundup of businesses that opened and closed in 2014, the small restaurant, which opened at the end of July at 471 16th Street, between 10th Avenue and Prospect Park West, closed up shop before the holidays. According to a note they posted on their Facebook page this week, the closure was due to a large debt:

Hello Friends and Neighbors!
Thank you all so much for the love, support, and encouragement this past year. 2014 has been pretty incredible as we worked tirelessly to create, design, build, and run Brooklyn Proper in Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn.
After a few minor set backs Brooklyn Proper began to pick up steam, and just as we were settling more comfortably into what was Brooklyn Proper the wind was knocked out of it. We learned of a debt too staggering for our young business. With heavy hearts we closed our doors just before Christmas.
We are so grateful to have been welcomed with open arms to Windsor Terrace and to have had the opportunity to serve you all at 471 16th street.
Much love and looking forward to 2015!

Best of luck to the Brooklyn Proper crew on their future endeavors!

It’s another setback for this space, which hasn’t had a lot of luck for businesses. Previously, Brooklyn Oyster Company shucked up shellfish for just a few months in this space in 2013, and before that was Scoopz ice cream shop, and before that Lia’s Ices, all within the past few years.
