Notes from the CB14 Monthly Meeting

Notes from the CB14 Monthly Meeting

The final Community Board 14 regular monthly meeting before summer break was last night (there is still one more committee meeting, for Youth Services, this Thursday; and CB14 celebrates the end of the year next Thursday with a New Member Reception and Awards Presentation). Here’s what you missed last night:

• The bronze rocking chairs of an Arts for Transit piece will be installed at the Avenue H station house beginning at the end of the month. Expect a ribbon-cutting ceremony this fall.

• CB14 got a lot of great info about cyber safety from NYPD’s Assistant Commissioner of Social Media, the Brooklyn ADA, and the Deputy Commissioner of Human Rights at a committee meeting last month. All of those individuals are willing and extremely interested in addressing your school, house of worship, or other group. If you’re interested, contact CB14 at 718-859-6357 or info@cb14brooklyn.com.

• The Board welcomes new members Hindy Bendel, Jeromane Berger-Gaskin, Ahsan Chughtai, Yehuda Schupper,  and Dawn-Marie Walker.

• The Borough President’s office honored CB14 members who had perfect meeting attendance in 2011: Ephraim Nierenberg, Bazah Roohi, Edward Powell, Donald Loggins, and Alvin Berk.

• Board Member Glenn Wolin put on his CERT hat to remind us to be ready for hurricane season: have a Go Bag packed, make sure you know if you’re in an evacuation zone and where your local shelter is (ours is PS 249), and buy a lantern and radio now to beat the rush. If you’d like to have an emergency preparedness seminar for your group or organization, contact Glenn at 917-348-1704.

• Celebrate the opening of the Parkside Playground (Winthrop between Bedford and Rogers) at a ribbon cutting ceremony with Councilmember Mathieu Eugene on Saturday, June 30 from 10am-6pm. There will be games, free food, and rides.

• Find out if you qualify for food assistance programs at the community office of Councilmember Jumaane Williams, 4517 Avenue D, on Monday, June 18 from 10am-2pm. For more info, call 718-629-2900.

• And a reminder that our public libraries need your help. Consider signing this petition to stop a $27 million cut to their city funding–that’s a 1/3 reduction to their current budget, which translates to closing 1/3 of the libraries in Brooklyn, while the remaining libraries would have their hours cut in half.
