A Mugging, An Out-Of-Control Motorcycle, And More News From The 72nd & 78th Precincts

Each week, the NYPD releases CompStat data that shows statistics of crimes in each precinct in the city. South Slope is covered in part by both the 72nd and 78th Precincts, so we’re sharing the stats from both with you, along with a few recent specific incidents, below.

78TH 5 20 - 26

Grand larceny remains at the top of the crime list, according to the latest CompStat from the 78th Precinct, with 8 reported instances during the week of May 20.

One such case involved a 26-year-old man who was approached by two teenagers on 10th Street, between 4th and 5th Avenue around 9pm on May 21. Patch reports that the victim was punched in the face multiple times and had his phone, e-reader, and backpack stolen. Thankfully, police caught up with the assailants that same evening.

72nd 5 20 - 26

Over in the 72nd Precinct, grand larceny also topped the list with 9 reported occurrences, but it does look like that number is down slightly from this same time last year. Additional crimes included 3 burglaries, 3 robberies, 1 felony assault and 1 rape.

On Tuesday, May 21, an out-of-control motorcycle driver was arrested after riding on sidewalks and into oncoming traffic on 3rd. Avenue. The driver crashed into a traffic barrier and police car at 18th Street, and was captured by police. Home Reporter notes that the arresting officer sustained “a swollen left hand and a bruised right knee during the arrest while the perp reportedly flailed his arms and slammed the officer’s hands on the floor.”
