New York Islanders Will Mix Old And New At Barclays Center

It’s changing times for the New York Islanders, with a new home in Brooklyn and a new arena at Barclays Center. But not everything is going to be new for their first season.

According to Barclays Center CEO Brett Yormark, “it is of the utmost importance to us to carry on the many deep-rooted traditions of the New York Islanders as they move to Brooklyn.” ‘

This means that the Islanders’ logo, primary home and road jerseys, Stanley Cup banners, and even public address system announcer Roger Luce — who has been the voice of the Islanders’ games since the 1998-1999 season — will remain the same.

The four championship banners — as well as “former Head Coach Al Arbour, former General Manager Bill Torrey and retired Islanders jersey numbers will hang in the rafters at Barclays Center as a permanent tribute to the team’s rich history,” announced Barclays Center in a press release.

Section 229, aka “Loudville,” will also be home to superfans from  who will lead chants during home games.

“Throughout its history, the team’s customs and unique elements have been instrumental in shaping the identity of the franchise,” said Yormark. “We’ve spent a lot of time talking with Islanders fans who made it clear they wanted their favorite traditions brought to Brooklyn, and we have listened. We are also delighted to have the support of Islanders legends as we welcome the team to the borough.”

On the new side, Islanders legends Mike Bossy, Clark Gillies, Butch Goring, and Bobby Nystrom have been named inaugural members of the New York Islanders Legends Program — an ambassador program that will take them to Brooklyn community events and sports games as part of an outreach effort.
