New Year’s Closures, City Services & Holiday Brunch In Ditmas Park

Happy New Year’s, Ditmas Park! Thursday, January 1 is New Year’s Day and if you’re in the area, here are some things you’ll need to know for the holiday. Note that New Year’s Eve, Wednesday, December 31, is not an official holiday, and all city government offices are open.

Government Offices, Parking, And Sanitation

All government offices are closed on New Year’s Day, including courts.

There is no mail delivery.

All NYC public schools remain closed through Friday, January 2, 2015, for Winter Recess. Students return to school on Monday, January 5, 2015.

Alternate side parking regulations are suspended and parking meters do not have to be paid on New Year’s Day. Additionally, no stopping, no standing, and no parking regulations are suspended, except where those regulations are in effect at any time or seven days a week.

There is no sanitation collection. If Thursday is your regular garbage or organics day, place your items out after 4pm. Recyclables should not be put out until the next week.

Libraries

All branches of the New York library systems are closed on New Year’s Day. But they will be open from 9am-1pm on New Year’s Eve.

Subways And Buses

The New York City Subway will operate on a regular weekday schedule on Wednesday. New York City subways and buses will operate on a Sunday schedule (meaning no B train).

If you are heading to or from Times Square for the ball drop, however, note the following traffic changes by the NYPD:

Beginning at 7pm on Wednesday, December 31, some subway access around Times Square will be closed.
Southbound and northbound N/R/Q lines will bypass the 49th Street station beginning at 7pm, Wednesday, December 31 until approximately 12:15am, Thursday, January 1.
The northbound 1 train will bypass the 50th Street station beginning at 7pm, Wednesday, December 31 until approximately 12:15am, Thursday, January 1.

Also, make sure you pack lightly, carrying only what can fit in your coat or a small bag.

  • Backpacks and large bags prohibited.
  • Alcohol beverages prohibited.
  • Property may not be abandoned at checkpoints.
  • Attendees who leave before the ball drops will not be able to gain entry to their original viewing area.

Grocery

C Town stores will be open until 9pm on New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s from 9am-8pm.

Downtown Natural Market (1701 Church Avenue on the corner of E 17th Street) will be open until 7pm on New Year’s Eve, and from 10am-8pm New Year’s Day.

The Flatbush Food Co-op (1415 Cortelyou Rd. between Rugby and Marlborough) will be open from 6am-9pm New Year’s Eve and 10am-12am New Year’s Day.

Cortelyou Market by Key Food (1610 Cortelyou Road between E 16th and E 17th Streets) will be open from 8am-10pm on New Year’s Eve and from 8am-8pm on New Year’s Day.

Stop & Shop (1009 Flatbush Avenue between Tilden Avenue and Albermarle Road) will be open until 9pm New Year’s Eve, and regular store hours (6am-11pm) on New Year’s Day.

TB Ackerson Wine Merchants (1205 Cortelyou Road between Westminster and Argyle Roads) will be open from 12-9pm New Year’s Eve, and 12-9pm as well on New Year’s Day.

Restaurants

Bar Chord (1008 Cortelyou Road between Stratford Road and Coney Island Avenue) is having a party, starting at 9pm, with Alegba and Friends and a free champagne toast on New Year’s Eve, and will be open starting at 4pm on New Year’s Day.

Cafe Madeline (1603 Cortelyou Road between E 16th and E 17th Streets) will be open normal hours both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day (7am-9pm).

The Castello Plan (1213 Cortelyou Road between Westminster and Argyle Roads) is offering dinner on New Year’s Eve, and will serve brunch on New Year’s Day from 11am-4pm.

The Farm on Adderley (1108 Cortelyou Road between Stratford and Westminster Roads) is offering dinner on New Year’s Eve, as well as brunch from 10:30am-3:30pm on New Year’s Day.

Hamilton’s (2826 Fort Hamilton Parkway on the corner of E 4th Street) is offering dinner on New Year’s Eve, as well as brunch from 11am-4pm on New Year’s Day.

Hunger Pang (1021 Church Avenue) will be offering dinner until 11pm on New Year’s Eve and will be open from 6pm-10pm on New Year’s Day.

Lark (1007 Church Avenue between E 10th Street and Stratford Road) will be open from 7am to likely 7pm New Year’s Eve (but call 718-469-0140 before you head over in case they close early) and 7am-7pm New Year’s Day.

Lea (1022 Cortelyou Road) is offering dinner on New Year’s Eve and brunch from 10am-3:30pm on New Year’s Day.

Milk & Honey (1119 Newkirk Avenue on the corner of Westminster Road) will be open regular hours (7am-to between 7pm and 8pm) both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Mimi’s Hummus (1209 Cortelyou Road between Westminster and Argyle Roads) will be serving dinner on New Year’s Eve and will serve brunch from 11am-4pm on New Year’s Day.

Ox Cart Tavern (583 Argyle Road on the corner of Newkirk Avenue) is open for dinner on New Year’s Eve until midnight (when there will be a free champagne toast), plus on New Year’s Day for brunch from 11am-4:30pm.

Purple Yam (1314 Cortelyou Road between Argyle and Rugby Roads) is offering dinner on New Year’s Eve, and will be open for brunch and dinner from 12pm-9pm (you can get brunch that entire time) on New Year’s Day.

Qathra (1112 Cortelyou Road between Stratford and Westminster Roads) is likely open from 7am-7pm New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, but call 718-484-3322 before you head over just to make sure.

Sycamore (1118 Cortelyou Rd. between Stratford and Westminster) is having a party on New Year’s Eve, and will open at 3pm on New Year’s DAy.

Wheated (905 Church Avenue between Coney Island Avenue and E 10th Street) is closed on New Year’s Eve, but will open New Year’s Day at 6pm.
