Alina’s Wine & Liquor is determined to bring a new focus to the way people of Sunset Park drink.

The store, which is located at 5014 4th Avenue, held its grand opening on May 21. The owners hope to ignite an appreciation for wine in Sunset Park which, according to the store’s co-owner Mario Guerrero, typically has more of a taste for spirits.

“We’re all from Sunset Park, so we’ve gotten the opportunity to feel out the neighborhood,” said Guerrero. “Most stores around here don’t really focus on wine.”

Sure enough, the only other liquor store on that stretch of 4th Avenue is Sunset Wine and Liquor at 5812 4th Avenue. Guerrero would like to educate his fellow Sunset Parkers on the intricacies of a good bottle of wine. He holds tastings during the store’s peak hours for the busy crowd, and he plans to organize wine tasting classes in the future.

Photos of the new space reveal sleek lounge-like wine store, with purple-tinged chandelier lighting.

“So far it’s been pretty good,” said Guerrero. “People have had mixed feelings, but we’ve had a mostly positive response in the first couple of weeks.”

The location had been vacant for 15 years, and before that it was a dentist’s office, according to Guerrero. Overall, the liquor store is a great addition to the neighborhood and we are looking forward to sampling some of their merlots. Cheers!
