New Tree Guards And Greening At MS 443
On Saturday, the Parents Association at New Voices MS 443 installed tree guards on 18th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues around seven newly planted trees.
This is the second part of an effort to make the school grounds more green. The first part was completed in April, which included tree care and adding self-watering window boxes mounted on the fence surrounding the school’s veranda.
Volunteer carpenter and neighbor Daniel O’Leary, who has helped with multiple greening projects in the neighborhood, prepared all of the materials for the tree guards.
The design for the tree guard came from Brian Dentz, a member of the 27th Street Block Association, which is installing the same tree guard model around new trees on their block.
The Parents Association had support for the project from the Partnerships for Parks Capacity Fund Grant, thanks to the Parks Equity Initiative of the New York City Council.
