Brennan’s Office To Help Seniors & Homeowners Stay Put

Local seniors facing rising rents and homeowners with mortgage issues can now meet directly with counselors and receive assistance at State Assemblymember James Brennan’s Cortelyou Road office weekly.

If you’re a senior citizen and meet certain qualifications, you may be able to freeze your rent through the Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption program. Seniors are invited to stop in at Assemblymember Brennan’s office at 1414 Cortelyou Road any Friday, from 10am to 1pm to speak with a counselors from the Flatbush Development Corporation.

Be sure to speak with a counselor- but the basic qualifications for the Senior Citizen Rent Exemption are that you must:

  • Be at least 62 years old;
  • Rent an apartment that is rent controlled or rent stabilized or hotel stabilized;
  • Have a total annual income of $52,000 or less and;
  • Currently put more than one-third of your household’s total monthly income toward rent.

Area homeowners who are having trouble paying their mortgages, or have other mortgage related questions, can also receive mortgage counseling. Homeowners should stop in at Assemblymember Brennan’s office any Wednesday, from noon to 5pm to speak with a counselor from a local non-profit, Brooklyn Housing and Family Services.
