New Residential Building Coming To 5th Avenue & 23rd Street

A four-story residential building is in the works for the corner of 5th Avenue and 23rd Street, and according to a sign posted on the construction fence, should be completed by the summer of 2014.

The existing building, formerly home to the White Eagle Tavern, sustained significant damage during Hurricane Sandy, which Concerned Citizens of Greenwood Heights noted was “as much due to neglect” as it was to the storm.

It will be nice to see some life on this corner, but we’re really going to miss the old White Eagle sign. Do any of our longtime neighbors have tales from the White Eagle Tavern’s glory days?
