A new public school is coming to an empty lot in Sunset Park.

The New York City School Construction Authority has filed an application with the City’s Department of Buildings to construct a K-8 public school at 278 59th Street, near the corner of Third Avenue, as first reported by NY Yimby today.

The new school, to be called P.S. 746-K, will be five stories (74 feet) tall, according to the DOB filing, with a total of 98,240 square feet — almost 20,000 square feet per floor. There will be offices and classrooms on all five floors.

The new school’s cafeteria will be located in the basement, Yimby reports, and a library, auditorium and gym will be situated on the ground floor. There will be a second library on the fifth floor, Yimby notes, and the school will also have an outside playground.

The site where P.S. 746-K is to be constructed is zoned M-1, for light manufacturing. It is just off the Gowanus Expressway, and two blocks from the Brooklyn Army Terminal.

With room for 676 students, P.S. 746-K will “help ease crowded classrooms in District 20,” which covers all of Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and the Fort Hamilton Army base, as well as parts of Bensonhurst, Kensington, Borough Park and Sunset Park, DNAInfo reported last year.
