New Permanent IDNYC Enrollment Center Now Open at New Lots Library
ID NYC sample card

EAST NEW YORK – NYC ID card – you know you want one. Brooklyn Public Library’s New Lots Branch is the newest spot to apply for the New York City’s official, government-issued identification card, which is available to all City residents age 14 and older, regardless of immigration status.

Shall we list the benefits? If you don’t have a driver’s license – many of us don’t need it in NYC-  it’s an excellent alternative. It will not let you drive, but is accepted by:

  • City agencies to access many services and programs;
  • NYPD for the purposes of issuing summons or desk appearance tickets instead of arrest;
  • For entry into public buildings, like schools;
  • For taking the high school equivalency exam in New York City;
  • By employers, when submitted with proof of work authorization.
  • You can use it to open bank accounts at some institutions

It works as your library card at Brooklyn Public Library, New York Public Library and Queens Public Library, and you get FREE one-year memberships to museums (think MOMA and such) and other cultural institutions, and discounts for sporting events, fitness and health centers, and many local businesses.

Here is the full list of benefits, and locations where you can get yours.

There are now to permanent IDNYC locations at BPL –  New Lots Branch and the one at the Central Library that opened in 2015.

To get an NYC ID card applicants must complete a form and submit it at an enrollment center. Applicants are also required to present proof of identity and residency in New York City; many types of documents are accepted.
