Avenue P will see a 25 percent increase in parking spaces in the next few weeks, according to City Councilmember Chaim Deutsch.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) just finished milling and paving the road, and the next step will be to add the markings for parking spaces, per Deutsch’s request.

There will be 20 new angled parking spots on Avenue P between East 23 St and East 24 St when all is said and done, according to a diagram of the project from the DOT. The spots will be angled on the north side of the road, the south side will remain parallel parking, according to Deutsch.

“Congestion is one of the biggest issues we have. People drive around the blocks looking for parking which causes pollution, congestion, and a lot of aggravation,” said Deutsch. “We want to make people’s lives easier not more difficult. Hopefully adding these parking spots will alleviate the aggravation and the parking in the area.”

There’s no exact timeline for when the parking will be installed, but Deutsch is hopeful it will be completed within the next few weeks.

The spots will be designed similarly to the spots on Batchelder Street between Avenue V and Avenue W. Deutsch is looking to also add spots to Batchelder Street between Avenue Y and Avenue Z.

Deutsch is eyeing other spots throughout the district where parking spaces could be added — specifically Brighton Beach — so stay tuned to find out where to start looking for spots.
