New Hurricane Sandy Video Shows Damage In Brooklyn, Celebrates Neighbors, Criticizes Gov’t Response

Brainy Academy’s (1733 Sheepshead Bay Road) Viktoria Altman, whose home flooded during Hurricane Sandy, made the video above, capturing some of the devastation the storm caused throughout Sheepshead Bay, Gerritsen Beach, Brighton Beach and elsewhere in the “forgotten boroughs.”.

It’s not just featuring the damage, though. Altman showcases the compassion and generosity of neighbors, and throws a few barbs at the government, saying they “did not come.”

The video is dedicated to “all the forgotten victims of the hurricane … to all who helped” and is “A message to our government. Prepare better. There will be a next time,” the video states.

Altman has been working to get more media attention to our attention-starved in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, giving interviews to outlets including the Jewish Forward:

Viktoria Altman, 33, whose home in the Sheepshead Bay section of Brooklyn was flooded by the storm, said she was frustrated that there was little police presence in her neighborhood. The area has had widespread power outages.

She said she was concerned about accidents on streets where stoplights have been knocked out, saying drivers have been “flying through the intersections.” She also said she worried that homes in the darkened area could be a target for criminals.

“It feels like we’ve been abandoned here by the powers that be,” said Altman, who runs a children’s tutoring center.
