New French/English Daycare Opens in Ditmas Park

Though she’s only lived in Ditmas Park since December, Assita Huchette says that it felt like home immediately.

“People are really friendly,” she said. “And there’s a lot of connection between mommies–I’ve met so many.”

That connection, and Assita’s understanding of how hard it is to leave you child in the care of someone else, is how she came to create Le Jardin de Louise, a bilingual daycare that is opening at the end of the month on Stratford Road right off Cortelyou. She had been living in Paris and working as a project manager when she became pregnant, and when it came time to leave her new baby in daycare, it was very difficult to find a place that was the right fit. Assita thought about how she would do it better, and when she and her family moved to the U.S. six months ago, she decided to follow her dream of creating the kind of daycare she had been looking for.

“I’m opening this daycare for every mom like me,” she said, “who feels sad to leave their kids.”

The space will be able to host 12 children total (6 kids ages 6 months-2 years, 6 kids ages 2-4), and to make the transition as easy as possible, children will begin with a one-week adaptation period, where they can get accustomed to the environment in the presence of their parent.

“I really want parents to trust me,” said Assita, who added that prospective parents can contact her to make an appointment to tour the daycare and meet her in person, but that you should do so fast, as space is filling up.

Because French is her first language, Assita has developed a program that will immerse the children in the language for a set time during each day. Her two assistants are also native French speakers, and she has filled the space with French language books as well.

“I’ve spent a lot of time on the details,” she said. “I’ve enjoyed it, and I am excited to create a welcoming place for children, where their parents will be comfortable to know they’re in good hands.”
