New Food Co-op At 825 Caton Avenue Celebrates Grand Opening With A Flurry Of Produce
The Windsor Terrace Food Co-op flung open its doors at 825 Caton Avenue, between E. 8th Street and Coney Island Avenue, this past Saturday, March 21, to hundreds of people celebrating the new site that organizers hope will become not only synonymous with fresh produce but with community as well.
The new co-op, which is the culmination of two and a half years of organizing by neighborhood volunteers, drew such a crowd its opening day that it quickly sold out of almost everything from the 49 boxes of fruits and vegetables members had ordered. By 5:30pm Saturday, all that was left were some black radishes, six green peppers, and two bunches of celery, food co-op board member Jack O’Connell told us.
“I think the message of weekend one was really good produce at good prices and a lot of people meeting their neighbors for the first time,” Jack, who spearheaded efforts to create the co-op, wrote.
The co-op, which currently has 414 members (you must be a member to shop there), will be open on Fridays from 4-8pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 10am-4pm (or until the food runs out). In addition to produce, the co-op will likely have dairy, cheese and eggs next week.
