Looking for a new place to grab a midnight snack or snag a breakfast sandwich on your morning commute?

A 24-hour deli and corner store has set up shop on Sheepshead Bay Road — directly across from the subway station at the corner of East 15th Street.

The new store, hoping to stake out a claim on the strip already populated by several other grocers, opened two weeks ago and is still flying the colorful banners celebrating its arrival. The shop is owned by Mohamed Almardie, a longtime Sheepshead Bay resident whose family also runs the halal market on Avenue Z.

“We like the the neighborhood. The people are very nice,” he said of wanting to open another business in Sheepshead Bay. “[The store] is also right across from the train station and the rent is fair.”

Almardie said he’s been working to secure a lease at the property, which is owned by the MTA, for three years. However, his opening couldn’t be better timed. The new traffic reconfiguration on Sheepshead Bay Road, which moved the B36 bus stop to Avenue Z, means commuters now have to walk past his storefront to catch the bus. Almardie said he’s still waiting to see if the changes will be a boon for his business.

“I hope people passing by our store will be a good thing,” he said. “You never know. Sometimes you open anywhere and you do good. Sometimes you open in a busy location and you can’t pay the rent. It’s in God’s hands.”

The corner store, called Golden Gourmet Deli & Grill, isn’t anything you haven’t seen before. Its stocked with snacks, cold beverages, and other items you might want to grab on the go. The deli has sensibly-prices sandwiches, bagels and salads. Almardie said they plan to add items like chicken and rice sometime soon.

We wish Almardie and his family the best on their new enterprise. Always nice to see another occupied storefront in the neighborhood.
